Like Blair Witch, The Last Broadcast (1998), The Collingswood Story (2002) and Cloverfield (2008), it’s the things you think you see, brief details glimpsed in the blurry shake of a badly executed pan that put you on edge, not the full-on glimpses of the supernatural that most viewers seem to want. The fake documentary approach tends to give just about anything a creepier edge (even otherwise terrible rubbish like Welcome to the Jungle (2007) has some eerie moments thanks to the off-kilter framing and blink-and-you’ll-miss-them details) and certainly Alien Abduction would have been a very bland and non-descript affair shot as a ‘proper’ film. That and the fact that, were it real, it would have been on every television news broadcast and the front pages of every newspaper across the world, not screening on an American cable TV channel. Inconsistencies abound (all power in the house is knocked out but the batteries in the camera – which seem to last an extraordinary long time – are unaffected) and the occasional technical deficiencies (we have to take their word for it that the aliens are lasering up a dead cow – it’s pretty much invisible in the final edit) make it abundantly clear that what we’re watching is just a hoax.

Which is a little harsh on a film which was really just a colossal joke – and if you fell for it then more fool you.

It purports to be a tape of one bizarre evening in the life of the McPherson family who are besieged by aliens.īased on an earlier tape made by director Dean Alioto (he told the Bad Movie Planet website it was made in 1989 in an interesting piece that details the somewhat murky history of the film), Alien Abduction evoked much anger in both the UFO community (presumably when the truth came out a lot of those who were claiming the film as definitive proof of alien life were feeling rightly foolish) and amongst critics and viewers in general.

That said, it’s creepy fun and – if other online resources are to be believed – succeeded in duping more than a viewers.
